App Feature Highlight: What Makes an App Stand Out

2. Personalisation and Relevance

Features that adapt to the user’s preferences feel more intuitive and valuable.

Example: Spotify’s “Discover Weekly” playlist keeps users engaged by curating music that feels tailor-made. This fits within the S.U.P.E.R. model (Simplicity, Usability, Personalisation, Everyday integration, Reliability) showing how personalisation elevates a feature from good to great.

Takeaway: Build features that use data smartly to anticipate needs and personalise experiences.

3. Integration with Everyday Life

Standout features are those that seamlessly fit into existing routines.

Example: Health apps that sync with wearables make it easy for users to track activity without extra effort. As one UX expert put it: “Great apps aren’t built on features alone, but on how those features make users feel.” This sense of effortless integration is what turns a feature into a habit.

Takeaway: Think about how your feature can reduce friction and blend into a user’s daily habits.

4. Reliability and Performance

No matter how clever a feature is, if it crashes or lags, it’s destined for failure.

Example: Messaging apps like WhatsApp became ubiquitous because of their reliability, not just their design. Consistency is what creates trust, and without trust even the most innovative features won’t succeed.

Takeaway: Prioritise performance testing to ensure features are consistent and dependable.

5. Delight Factor

Beyond utility, some features surprise and delight, creating emotional connections.

Example: Duolingo’s streak system turns language learning into a game, making users feel rewarded. It’s a perfect illustration of how a small, creative twist can transform an otherwise ordinary feature into something people talk about and stick with.

Takeaway: Add a touch of creativity to transform a functional feature into something memorable.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Overloading with features: Trying to do too much can confuse users.

• Copying competitors: Features that aren’t distinctive don’t give people a reason to choose your app.

• Ignoring feedback: Features should evolve with user behaviour, not remain static.

An app stands out not just because of what it offers, but because of how well its features connect with users’ needs, habits, and emotions. By focusing on simplicity, relevance, reliability, and delight. Using models like S.U.P.E.R. to guide design, developers can create experiences that people return to and recommend.
